Why RPO Might Matter More for SMEs Than the Big Corporates

There’s a perception out there that Recruitment Process Outsourcing is built for the big end of town. High-volume hiring, international operations, in-house talent teams stretched across multiple business units. And for years, that’s largely where it sat. But the market’s moved. So has the model.

Right now, more Irish SMEs than ever are battling to hire. The ambition is there. So is the workload. But what’s often missing is the structure. I see it constantly - founder-led companies trying to scale, but recruitment is being squeezed in around everything else. There’s no process, no system, no one dedicated to owning it. And in that gap, good candidates fall through the cracks.

What frustrates me is how many SMEs rule out RPO without understanding what it actually looks like today. The assumption is it’s expensive or bloated or meant for someone ten times their size. But that’s outdated thinking. The reality is far simpler - and far more useful.

“The Fortis team didn’t just support us - they became part of us. They blended into the business seamlessly and gave us high-impact recruitment firepower when we needed it most.” (Recent quote from a Fortis Edge, SME client)

This isn’t about scale, i’s about structure. Most SMEs are still running hiring out of shared inboxes, LinkedIn ads and scattered referrals. That might get you a few wins early on, but it’s not a sustainable way to grow. You lose quality, you lose time and eventually, you lose the trust of the people you're trying to bring in.

An embedded RPO model brings the missing capability into your business - without the overhead. It means you’ve got someone in the room who understands the pressure you're under and can build the process while delivering on it. Not a third-party agency lobbing CVs over the fence, but a partner who acts like part of your team.

This is where it changes everything. When you're embedded, you don’t just fill jobs - you fix the root problems. You work with hiring managers directly and you spot obstacles in real time. You streamline decision-making. You influence how roles are scoped and how offers are shaped. That level of proximity is what allows things to really shift.

And that shift doesn’t take a year. Sometimes it’s one day a week onsite. Sometimes it’s a few weeks of intense support. It’s about meeting the business where it is, not where some corporate playbook thinks it should be. That flexibility is what makes RPO such a powerful fit for SMEs - especially those growing fast and already under pressure.

And here’s the irony - the same things that make RPO appealing to big companies - consistency, quality, time saved, market reach - are the exact things SMEs need too. Arguably more so, because one hire in a 50-person business has a far bigger impact than one hire in a 5,000-person business. The stakes are higher which means getting it wrong costs more - in time, in money and in momentum. That’s when proper recruitment support isn’t a luxury - it’s essential.

RPO gives you that. Not just more hires, but better ones. Not just process, but consistency. Not just speed, but clarity. And because we’re sitting alongside you, not outside looking in, we make sure the work is actually aligned with how your business runs day to day.

It’s not about replacing HR. It’s not about tying yourself into a two-year contract. It’s about getting the support you need, when you need it, from people who understand how hiring really works - and who aren’t afraid to challenge, question and improve what’s already there.

So yes - SMEs can benefit from RPO. In fact, in this market, they might be the ones who need it most.

If you're an Irish business that’s grown past the point where hiring can be handled casually, it’s time to think differently. RPO isn’t just for the big players anymore. It’s for any business that wants to hire better.
